In this post, we are going through the deleted and unreleased scenes from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. That includes the deleted scenes found on the home media releases, clips from behind the scenes documentaries and trailers, as well as scenes from the script.
The Chamber of Secrets is the longest film in the series and arguably the most faithful adaptation. Therefore many of the scenes from the books are in the movie. The movie has 19(!) deleted scenes included on the DVD and Blu-ray releases. These deleted scenes have been cut back into the film in the Extended Version found on the Ultimate Edition, Wizard's Collection and Hogwarts Collection, making the film 13 minutes longer.
Unlike the deleted & unreleased scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, there are not as many videos of unreleased scenes from Chamber of Secrets. However, a few clips were found in the trailers and behind the scenes documentaries.
Most of the unreleased scenes are from the script, and it is unsure whether these scenes were filmed or not. As they filmed most of the scenes in the script to the Philosopher's Stone movie, it is believed they did the same for Chamber of Secrets.
Privet Drive
The first deleted scene has some cut lines from Dudley where he complains to Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia about him losing his second bedroom.
In the script, there are some extra lines from Vernon, Dudley and Mr Mason about "the cat" making noises upstairs. In reality, it's Dobby that's causing mayhem upstairs.
This deleted scene found on the home media release is an extended version of the scene where Dobby drops the floating cake on Mrs Mason.
After this scene, Harry was supposed to receive a letter from the Ministry of Magic, warning him that he is not permitted to use magic outside of school. Uncle Vernon then becomes furious at Harry because he hadn't told them about this rule. He then decides to lock him in his room since he can't use magic to escape.
Dudley tease Harry for being locked in his room on his birthday. We also get a sassy line from Harry when he snaps back at Dudley.
Diagon Alley and Flying to Hogwarts
Arthur Weasley is introduced at the Borrow in this movie. We learn that he works at the Ministry of Magic and that he is obsessed with Muggles. At the Burrow, we get his famous line "What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?" However, his line in the script is different. In the script, he asks Harry about a parking meter instead of a rubber duck. I am glad they changed this as it shows Arthur lack of understanding Muggle objects and technology, and it makes for a more comedic scene.
In the script, it is Percy who shows Harry how to use Floo Powder while in the movie, it is Ron.
This deleted scene is an extended version of Harry arriving at Boring & Burkes. Harry gets caught by Hand of Glory but manages to free himself and hide just as Draco and Lucius Malfoy enter the shop. Lucius is looking to sell items to Boring because the Ministry is doing raids on private houses to find dark objects. Meanwhile, Draco goes around the shop looking at the different things on display and nearly finds Harry in his hiding place. Lucius tells Draco off for touching things in the shop, and they leave.
As Harry is about to exit Borgin & Burkes to Knockturn Alley, Borgin gets hold of him and asks if he is looking for something. Harry says that he's in the wrong place and exits the shop.
This scene shows Harry and Ron flying the Ford Anglia over Kings Cross Station, and they nearly crash into a clock tower.
Hogwarts Classes
After Harry and Ron get detention for flying the car to school and for being seen by seven muggles, professors Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape leave to rejoin the feast. As Harry and Ron are about to leave, they stumble upon a letter in front of Filch. It is a Kwikspell letter, a course to beginners magic. Filch quickly snatches the letter back in embarrassment, as it proves that he is a squib.
In the script, Harry, Ron and Hermione talk to Neville and Seamus before the Herbology class. Neville and Seamus are amazed that they got detention on the first day, and that is must be a new record. Hermione and Ron argue with each other right before the class begins.
TThis scene is an extension of the scene in the movie where Colin Creevey introduces himself to Harry. In this extended scene, we see an exited Colin talking about him coming from a Muggle family.
This deleted scene is from the first Defence Against the Dark Arts class. It shows Gilderoy Lockhart handing out a Dark Arts Quiz, where the questions are about himself. Hermione gets recognised by Lockhart for being the only person to know about his secret ambition, which is to rid the world of evil and market his own range of hair care potions.
After the DADA class, the trio and Neville discuss how Professor Lockhart hasn't got a clue of what he is doing. Hermione snaps back at them, telling them to read about all the fantastic things he has done if they are unsure of what he can do.
A user on the Potter Vanilla Forums named Kranen interviewed Simon Fisher-Becker, who plays the Fat Friar. He revealed that they filmed the Deathday Party for the Chamber of Secrets movie. He also said that he had filmed scenes for all the films up until the Goblet of Fire. Together he had filmed at least 20 minutes of footage as the Fat Friar. Other sources have not confirmed this, and the Deathday Party is not included in the script, so it is unsure how reliable this information is. Click here to read the post.
Today I met Simon Fisher-Becker (Fat Friar) and asked him about his experience filming Philosophers Stone (for the five seconds he was in). I was shocked when he revealed that he had filmed scenes for all the movies up until Goblet of Fire. He said that throughout all the films added up, he would have had AT LEAST 20 minutes of footage with him that was cut. He talked about filming the deathday party scene in Chamber of Secrets and he thought it was good fun. Then started laughing about the fact that his name in the Philosophers Stone credits appears for longer than he does
He's a really nice guy.
The Chamber of Secrets has been Opened
Filch blames Harry for petrifying Mrs Norris, his reason being that Harry knows he is a squib. However, Harry doesn’t know what a squib is. As the golden trio walks away, Ron explains that a squib is someone born into a wizarding family, but has no magical powers. The trio also discusses whether or not Gilderoy Lockhart heard the voice.
After being told about the Chamber of Secrets by Professor McGonagall in her transfiguration class, Harry, Ron and Hermione discuss who the heir could be, and they talk about the Polyjuice Potion In the movie, this discussion happens in the corridor outside the transfiguration classroom. However, in a behind the scenes clip, we can see that they filmed an alternate version of this scene in the Gryffindor Common Room. Both scenes have the same dialogue.
This deleted scene shows Harry flying through the Slytherin crowd trying to avoid the rogue bludger. Did you try to injure the Slytherins on purpose Harry?
Hermione prepares the Polyjuice Potion in the girl's lavatory in the two pictures. However, in the movie, they do not show her using these exact bottles that she is holding here.
Harry Speaks Parseltongue
In this part of the film, there are many deleted scenes. They mostly deal with Harry struggling with being marked as the Heir of Slytherin by his schoolmates.
The first scene is when Justin Finch-Fletchley meets Harry at the Dueling Club. Here he mentions to Harry that he is a muggle-born, which is one of the reasons that the Hufflepuff’s believe that Harry is the one who petrified Justin.
The next scene takes place after the Dueling Club, where Harry speaks parseltongue in front of the whole school. In this scene, we see Harry with Hedwig looking at Hogwarts from a distance, while Harry wonders who he is and if really could be the Heir of Slytherin.
When Harry is about to leave the Library, he overhears some Hufflepuff students talking about why they think Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. Ernie Macmillan tells Hannah Abbott that Justin Finch-Fletchley is hiding in the Hufflepuff dormitory because he let slip that he is a muggle-born. The Hufflepuff’s discuss how they believe that Voldemort only went after Harry because he didn’t want another Dark Lord to competing with him.
Right after this, Harry runs into Hagrid, who’s had his second rooster killed this term. Hagrid has just asked Professor Dumbledore for permission to use a bit of magic around the hen-coop. Being a bit furious and upset that the Hufflepuff’s believe him to be the Heir, Harry lies that he has a lot of studying to do and runs away. This leads into the scene where Harry finds Nearly Headless Nick and Justin Finch-Fletchley petrified.
The next deleted scene takes place at Christmas and shows Fred and George joking with Harry about him being the Heir of Slytherin and a seriously evil wizard. Harry still questions himself if he possibly could be the Heir, and at the end of the scene, Hermione reveals that the Polyjuice Potion is going to be ready for Christmas.
Polyjuice Potion and Tom Riddle's Diary
This deleted scene shows Harry and Ron hiding Crabbe and Goyle after making them unconscious. They then sprint to the girl’s lavatory where Hermione waits for them with a pair of stolen Slytherin robes from the laundry.
This shot, found in a TV Spot, shows two doors opening to reveal the Slytherin Common Room.
Here Malfoy reads a Daily Prophet article about Arthur Weasley to Harry and Ron, disguised as Crabbe and Goyle. The article states that the Ministry of Magic fined Mr Weasley fifty Galleons for bewitching a Muggle car. Draco then goes on to say that Arthur and the rest of the Weasleys are an embarrassment to the Wizarding World.
The next deleted scene is where Crabbe and Goyle wake up from the Sleeping Draught and meets Harry and Ron disguised as them. Crabbe and Goyle look confused as Harry and Ron run away before they completely transform back to themselves.
A scene of Harry and Ron visiting Hermione at the hospital wing was cut from the movie. Harry and Ron bring her books as she needs to catch up on all the classes she is missing while recovering from transforming into a cat. Hermione has received a get-well card from Professor Lockhart that she keeps under her pillow because it's special to her. Harry and Ron leave the hospital wing discussing how anyone could fall for Lockhart. This leads to the scene where they find Tom Riddle's Diary.
In the script, we can read that they cut a scene where Ginny realises that Harry has got the diary. This scene takes place as Harry and Ron walk back towards the Gryffindor Common-room. Harry examines the diary, and Ron quickly points out that old items could contain dark curses. Harry then pretends he is cursed to mess with Ron, but Ginny also sees this and runs away in horror. This little scene explains how Ginny found out that Harry had the diary. Later Harry and Ron notice the name, Tom Marvolo Riddle, on the book which leads into the next deleted scene.
This deleted scene takes place in the hospital wing where the golden trio discusses the diary and who Tom Riddle could be. Ron remembers his name because he had to polish his trophy in his detention. Some of the dialogue in this scene is taken from the previous scene that is only found in the script.
In the script, they had a longer conversation than in the deleted scene, that included Hermione telling Harry to be careful because she is scared something dangerous is about to happen.
This short scene is of Harry waking Ron telling him that Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets 50 years ago.
The Forbidden Forest
In the script, there is a scene of Harry hearing the voice in the corridors before the Quidditch match. As Harry, Ron and Hermione are about to walk down to the Quidditch pitch they meet Ginny. Ron asks if she is going to the match, but Ginny looks startled and walks away. Right after this Harry hears the voice for a brief moment before it fades away and Hermione realises something and sprints away. Here we get Ron's great line "When in doubt, go to the library".
After Professor McGonagall tells the Gryffindors about the new school rules and that the school could be closed if the culprit is not caught Neville, Seamus and Dean Thomas have a discussion. Neville thinks that they should just throw out all the Slytherin's because it is the Heir of Slytherin that's behind the attacks and he uses Slytherin's monster. Seamus doesn't know what he will do if they close Hogwarts, but Dean Thomas points out that as long as Dumbledore is at the school it won't close.
This short deleted scene is of Harry and Ron putting on the Invisibility Cloak before going to visit Hagrid at night.
While in the Forbidden Forest, Harry and Ron come across the Ford Anglia, but they dare not approach it in fear of losing the trail of spiders. As Ron points out, it looks like the forest has turned it wild.
The Chamber of Secrets
Harry and Ron want to visit Hermione in the hospital wing after finding out that Hagrid never opened the Chamber of Secrets and was innocent. However, Madam Pomfrey does not want to let them in as there is no point talking to a petrified person. Ron says that they just want to be with her a bit as she is their friend. Ultimately Madam Pomfrey agrees that they can come in to visit her, but it has to be quick. When they are with Hermione, Ron wonders if Lockhart could be the Heir of Slytherin, though he quickly backtracks on this after getting a look off Harry. This scene leads to them finding the piece of paper in Hermione's hand.
In a Behind the Scenes clip, we hear Harry's line about how the crowing of the rooster could kill a Basilisk. This line was probably cut due to the scene with Hagrid explaining that his rooster's keeps getting killed was cut.
A shot of Harry and Ron sliding down to the Chamber of Secrets was cut from the movie. This shot is from a TV Spot.
Harry and Tom Riddle have an extended conversation in the script. Riddle talks about his disappointment when he learned Ginny had stolen the diary back from Harry. She was afraid he would find out that she was the one to strangle the roosters and open the Chamber of Secrets. Some of the dialogue in the script is in bold italics which indicate possible flashbacks. This means we could have got a flashback of Ginny breaking into the boy's dormitory and stealing the diary back. The picture of Ginny standing on the balcony between the dormitories could have been taken while they filmed this. It is unknown where this picture fits in the movie.
From a movie still, we can see that they possibly filmed more scenes of Harry being followed by the Basilisk.
After being pierced by the Basilisk fang, Tom Riddle speaks to Harry. He asks if he has any final words and declares that the famous Harry Potter will be defeated at last by the Dark Lord he so unwisely challenged. This is not included in the film
In the script, we can read that Ginny and Harry meet with Ron in the tunnel before they fly out of the chamber. Ron is ecstatic to see his sister alive. Fawkes takes them to the Headmasters office where Dumbledore, McGonagall, Arthur, Molly are. Dumbledore questions Harry, Ron and Ginny and gives them some backstory on Lord Voldemort. As McGonagall leads Ginny to the hospital wing, Molly tells Ginny that she never should have trusted anything that can think for itself if she couldn't see where it keeps its brain. Dumbledore then tells Harry and Ron that they have broken a dozen school rules. The scene continues as it is in the movie.
That was every deleted and unreleased scene I was able to find from the Chamber of Secrets movie. I hope you found this post interesting and if I have missed any scenes, please share it in the comment section. Be sure to check out the Deleted & Unreleased Scenes from the Philosopher's Stone movie.
